People arriving at Whitney Portal for the first time do not get the feeling of wide open spaces they may have expected. Instead there is a granite force field pressing on one's head, neck, and back due to the presence of a gazillion tons of granite looming overhead. It takes quite a bit of climbing and hiking to get out from underneath all that rock. The photo below shows the south side of the Whitney Portal North Wall, where we gained the ridge.
