112 miles NW of Las Vegas is the town of Beatty and five miles west of Beatty is the abandoned mining town of Rhyolite. Five miles west of Rhyolite is the NE boundary of Death Valley National Park and twenty miles to the east is the western boundary of the Nevada Test Site. Rhyolite hit it's peak from 1905 to 1910. By 1919 it was a ghost town. Albert Szukalksi, a Belgium artist, gave the town the Gold Well Open Air Museum in 1984. His art and the ruins of Rhyolite are worth seeing if one goes through Beatty.
