Utah is famous for its soft sandstone so it was a surprise to find this
granite mountain in New Mexico. Organ Mountain is located east of Los Cruces and south of the LBJ Space Center
and west of the White Sands Missile Range. The approach hike takes about an
hour and the mountain
is a lot bigger when one gets on it. The cooler times of the year
are best for being here. We planned a route the day
before the climb, using binoculars, but during the climb we got off route and blew our chances of tagging the summit.
We did
manage about 10 pitches before turnaround time and got an adrenaline
boost doing multiple rappels involving hanging on anchors. A good place
to visit when rained out of Utah.
